Have you ever tried to share a webpage, only to find the URL is three lines long, filled with random letters, numbers, and symbols? It looks messy in an email, takes up too many characters in a social media post, and is impossible to read aloud.
The solution is a URL shortener. A short link takes that long, ugly web address and turns it into something clean, clickable, and trackable. Whether you're a small business owner sharing a new product, a freelancer sending a portfolio, or just someone trying to tidy up a social media bio, knowing how to create a short link is a fundamental digital skill.
Here is a simple, step-by-step guide to creating your very first short link.
Step 1: Choose Your URL Shortener
There are many URL shorteners available, but for your first link, you want one that is free, reliable, and offers tracking.
For this tutorial, we will use Klic.in. It is an excellent platform for beginners while still offering professional-grade analytics and custom short link options right out of the box.
Step 2: Create an Account (Optional, but Recommended)
While some tools let you shorten a link without signing up, creating a free account is highly recommended. Why?
Tracking: If you have an account, the platform will track how many times your link is clicked.
History: You can see a list of all the links you've ever created.
Editing: You can update or edit the back-half of the link later if needed.
Go to Klic.in and sign up using your email or a Google login to get started.
Step 3: Copy Your Long URL
Find the webpage you want to share. This is your "Long URL" or "Destination URL."
Go to the address bar at the top of your web browser, highlight the entire web address (make sure it includes the https://), right-click, and select Copy.
Step 4: Create the Short Link
Log into your Klic.in dashboard.
Look for a prominent button that says "Create," "Create New," or "Shorten a link." Click it.
A menu or pop-up will appear with a field labeled "Destination," "Paste long URL," or similar.
Right-click in that field and select Paste to insert your long URL.
Step 5: Customize Your Link (The "Back-Half")
This is where you make the link your own. Most platforms will auto-generate a random string of characters (e.g., klic.in/3xY7zQ). However, customizing the "back-half" (the part after the slash) makes the link much more trustworthy and memorable.
Look for a field labeled "Custom back-half" or "Alias."
Delete the random characters.
Type in something descriptive and brief. For example, if you are sharing a summer sale page, type summer-sale-26.
Note: Custom back-halves must be unique across the platform. If someone else has already used summer-sale, you might have to try mybrand-summer-sale.
Step 6: Generate and Share
Once you've pasted your destination and customized the back-half, click the final "Create" or "Shorten" button.
Congratulations! You have created your first short link.
The platform will display your new, clean URL (e.g., klic.in/summer-sale-26). Simply click the "Copy" button next to it. You can now paste this short link into your Instagram bio, a text message, an email newsletter, or anywhere else you want to drive traffic cleanly and efficiently.
Return to your dashboard in a few days to check your analytics and see how many people clicked!
